Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • The major function of the radiology nurse is to deliver or provide a continued level of quality nursing care afforded the patients who will utilize the services of all the subdivisions of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging.
  • The radiology nurse is an individual who holds the ultimate responsibility for the direct and indirect nursing care in the following areas: general diagnostic, minor specials, mammography, special imaging, nuclear imaging, ultrasound and CAT scan.
  • The radiology nurse reports directly to the Nursing Department and to the Director of Diagnostic Imaging in respect to DI issues. The radiology nurse will work collaboratively with respect to the implementation of orders as they are related to direct patient care.
  • Gathers pertinent objective and subjective data using all available resources.
  • Assures, as appropriate, that a patient assessment and plan of care is in place.
  • Provides direct patient care as specified by nursing directives or indications of treatments specified (for the maintaining of continual patient care while in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging.)
  • Informs and prepares patients for special procedure exams or other exams as specified in department policies or procedures.
  • Aware of schedules so that there is a nurse provider for the needs of all patients in Diagnostic Imaging.
  • Assists with patient difficulties post contrast material or media injections. Responds to and orchestrates contrast reaction procedures.
  • Administers medications as determined necessary by the radiologist, assuring that proper pre-medication history has been obtained, documented, and related to the radiologist.
  • Performs urinary catheterization when necessary. Performs patient preparation procedures when necessary.
  • Applies or changes dressings or special appliances required.
  • Monitors or cares for emergency room or critical status patients.
  • Maintains the ability and familiarity in the performance of the use of all special hospital equipment such as monitors infusion pumps, pacemakers, oxygen equipment, respirators, etc. Reports the need of repairs or preventive maintenance to the director of Diagnostic Imaging. Assures cleanliness of equipment by following hospital policy.
  • Provide assistance in Nuclear Medicine performing stress tests.
  • Float throughout the facility, to meet the needs of the hospital.
  • Requires weekend and holiday rotation.

Education/Experience Required:

  • Experience as an ICU/CCU or Emergency Room Nurse.
  • Experience as a radiology nurse in a similar setting is preferred.
  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing.

Registration/Certification:

  • Current RN Massachusetts License.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS
  • PALS Preferred
