COME AND BE EXCEPTIONAL! JOIN THE BMC EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT NURSING TEAM AT THE BUSIEST LEVEL 1 TRAUMA CENTER IN NEW ENGLAND
Boston Medical Center has implemented a comprehensive new graduate nurse transition to practice program incorporating the Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies. New graduate nurses are hired into the institution in cohorts. The cohort members attend nursing orientation together and followed by a series of educational days and brown bag lunches over 6 months. These activities, besides being educational also bring the group together promoting social support and relevant discussion of common situations encountered in the first year of practice. The new graduate nurse residency includes a variety of experiential learning modalities which provide opportunities for assimilation and application of clinical theory and concepts to bedside practice.
Position: New Graduate RN Residency
Department: Adult Emergency Department
Schedule: 36 Hours, Day/ Evenings with every third weekend
New Graduate RN Residency for Sept 8, 2025 start date.
You must obtain licensure for practice in Massachusetts before the start date. Work full-time for six months in varying shifts. Selected candidates must make a two-year commitment to the unit that invests in training them. Assume positions of 36 Hour Day/ Evening shift per week with every third weekend and every other holiday.
Scheduling Summary
Following the American Nurses Association’s “Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice,” the registered nurse, under the general supervision of the Nurse Manager, is primarily responsible for professional performance and direct patient care.
Role Description
The role is designated for nurses who have graduated from nursing school within twelve (12) months before their date of hire and encompasses nursing assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, evaluation, and coordination of care for patients and their families across the healthcare continuum. The registered nurse is accountable for clinical, educational, quality, and fiscal patient care outcomes using the model of care designed by the nursing department and following established BMC policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and standards of practice.

- This schedule provides maximum exposure to the new clinical environment, colleagues, and patient populations.
- After the conclusion of the residency program, shifts - including weekend rotation, unit, and hourly status, will be assigned.
- All cohort participants are paid as employees ($38.05 per hour) and will receive benefits according to Boston Medical Center’s established policies and procedures.
- Each nurse is responsible in collaboration with their preceptor and clinical nurse educator to devise weekly goals.
- Basic computer proficiency is inclusive of the ability to access, enter, and interpret computerized data/information.
- Effective interpersonal skills to facilitate communication with various healthcare team members, patients, and families.
- Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
- Multilingual skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to the patient populations served by the Medical Center preferred.
- Relevant clinical experience and/or specialty, certification is preferred for certain practice areas.
- Analytical ability to solve clinical nursing issues and conduct quality improvement projects.

New Grad Residency Program
- 24 weeks of orientation, including ENA modeled Emergency Nursing specific classes and precepted shifts
- BLS/ACLS/TNCC certifications included during orientation
REQUIRED EDUCATION
- Graduation from an accredited BSN program within the twelve (12) months before the date of hire required.
- 6 Months of Emergency Technician experience at a Level 1 Trauma Center strongly preferred
- Graduation for an accredited ASN program within the twelve (12) months before the date of hire required.
- If graduating from an ASN program, Registered Nurses are required to enroll in a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) program by the end of the first year of employment and receive their BSN by the end of the semester in which their four (4) year anniversary of employment at BMC occurs.
