Position Description

Shape the Future of Surgical Breast Cancer Care

At NewYork‑Presbyterian, our breast surgery teams deliver world‑renowned, compassionate care grounded in innovation, precision, and partnership. As a Practice Nurse supporting the Breast Surgery Program at the state‑of‑the‑art David H. Koch Center (DHK), you’ll guide patients through diagnosis, surgical decision‑making, treatment preparation, and postoperative recovery. Your role is essential to ensuring safe care coordination, clinical excellence, and a positive patient experience during some of the most stressful moments in a patient’s life.

Clinical Responsibilities

The Breast Surgery Practice Nurse is a key clinical partner to surgeons, APPs, navigators, and multidisciplinary oncology colleagues. In this ambulatory setting, you will:

  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessment and ongoing evaluation for patients undergoing breast surgery—including lumpectomy, mastectomy, reconstruction, and high‑risk evaluations.
  • Support pre‑operative and post‑operative care, including wound evaluation, symptom triage, drain management education, and postoperative follow‑up coordination.
  • Deliver patient and family education on diagnosis, surgical options, perioperative expectations, recovery timelines, and self‑care plans.
  • Partner with surgeons and APPs to facilitate safe pre‑surgical clearance, diagnostic imaging workflows, biopsy coordination, and ongoing surveillance.
  • Guide patients through care transitions—surgery consults, imaging, pathology review, plastic surgery integration, medical oncology referrals, and survivorship planning.
  • Respond to patient calls and portal messages, performing symptom triage and escalating clinical concerns per established protocols.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and use of clinical technology to support the continuity and quality of care.
  • Promote a safe, therapeutic environment in alignment with NYP Nursing standards and regulatory requirements.

Professional Practice Responsibilities

  • Provide care grounded in the ANA Nursing Scope & Standards and NYP’s Primary Nursing model, emphasizing critical thinking, clinical decision‑making, and accountability.
  • Participate in Shared Governance, quality‑improvement initiatives, surgical care optimization projects, and evidence‑based practice activities.
  • Demonstrate excellence in communication, patient‑centered service, cultural competency, ethical practice, and teamwork.
  • Maintain professional competency through ongoing education, skill development, and participation in unit‑based learning programs.

Required

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
  • Current NYS Registered Professional Nurse (RN) license
  • BCLS; additional life‑support certifications per department policy
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, and patient‑education skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast‑paced oncology practice setting

Preferred

  • Experience in breast surgery, surgical oncology, ambulatory surgery, or perioperative nursing
  • OCN® or CNOR preferred (or willingness to pursue certification)
  • Experience with patient navigation, triage, or multidisciplinary oncologic care
